iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max And iPhone Ultra | Everything Need to Know

Apple’s highly anticipated “Surprise and Shine” event has officially been confirmed for September 9th. While rumors have been swirling for months, the picture of what to expect is finally becoming clear.

With a change in leadership and a shift in release strategies, the iPhone 18 series along with of Apple’s first foldable device promises some of the most significant hardware changes we have seen in years. Here is a breakdown of everything you need to know, from the massive battery upgrades to the astronomical expected prices in Pakistan.

A New Era for Apple Hardware

This launch event is distinct for two major reasons.

Firstly, Apple has a new CEO. John Ternus has officially taken the reins from Tim Cook as of September 1st. Unlike Cook, who heavily focused on supply chain optimization (often resulting in shrinkages, like removing chargers from boxes), Ternus has a strong background in hardware engineering. This shift suggests that upcoming Apple products might feature substantial hardware innovations rather than just software tweaks.

Secondly, Apple is changing its release strategy. For the first time in years, the base model iPhone 18 will not be launching this fall. Instead, the September event will focus exclusively on the premium devices: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and potentially the highly anticipated foldable, the “iPhone Ultra”. The standard iPhone 18 and 18 Plus are now slated for an early-to-mid 2027 release, splitting Apple’s calendar into two distinct launch cycles.

iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max: Refined Design and New Colors

While the physical dimensions and overall body shape of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will remain identical to the 17 series—meaning your old cases will still fit perfectly—there are noticeable differences.

A Smaller Dynamic Island: The front display features a smaller “pill” cutout (the Dynamic Island). Apple has reportedly achieved a 30% reduction in its size by moving the IR blaster and other sensors beneath the display.

A Brighter, Samsung-Built Screen: The front panel will feature an even brighter display, manufactured entirely by Samsung, retaining the smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

The End of the Touch Camera Button: The dedicated side camera button remains, allowing users to press it to open the camera and take photos. However, the touch/swipe functionality introduced previously has been removed. This is likely due to the massive repair costs associated with it; fixing a broken touch-sensitive button often required replacing the entire chassis, turning a minor break into a $600-$700 repair nightmare.

New Color: The current lineup of Orange, Silver, and Dark Blue are not coming now. The 18 Pro series will introduce three new color shades: a Deep Cherry (referred to as Burgundy), a Sky Blue (similar to the iPhone 13), and a True Black.

Massive Internal Upgrades: Variable Aperture and 2nm Process

The true magic of the iPhone 18 Pro series lies beneath the surface.

Variable Aperture Camera: While the rear will still a triple 48MP camera setup, the main sensor is introducing a variable aperture lens. This mechanical feature allows the lens to physically open and close, improving low-light photography and creating natural, DSLR-like background blur (bokeh) without relying on software processing.

Front Camera Bump: The front-facing camera is expected to receive a major upgrade, jumping from the 18MP sensor seen on the 17 Pro Max to a sharper 24MP sensor.

2nm Processor: The devices will be powered by a new processor built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm wafer-stacking technology. While this yields a standard 20% bump in processing power, the real story is its efficiency. It consumes 30% less power to perform the same tasks.

Multi-Day Battery Life: Combining this ultra-efficient 2nm chip with a battery capacity increase of 300 to 500 mAh, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is poised to deliver genuine two-day battery life, even for power users.

The “iPhone Ultra” Foldable: An Experimental First Gen

Apple is finally entering the foldable market with the “iPhone Ultra,” a passport-style folding device. However, early indicators suggest buyers should approach with caution.

The Hardware: The rear will feature dual 48MP cameras (utilizing older sensors from the 17 Pro Max, not the new ones), and it will house two 18MP front cameras—one on the outer screen and one inside.

The Software Advantage: When unfolded into a small iPad, the software experience is reportedly the best on any foldable. Because Apple controls its entire ecosystem, the OS will automatically unlock hidden features and menus within apps when the device is unfolded, even if the app developer hasn’t specifically updated their software for the Ultra.

The Catch: Despite the incredible software, testers have noted that a visible crease remains in the center of the screen, and the camera quality does not justify the astronomical price tag. Like the Apple Vision Pro, this is a first-generation experimental product, and early adopters will likely face steep depreciation.

Expected Pricing and Availability in Pakistan

International sales and pre-orders are expected to begin around September 18th. For the Pakistani market, the prices (including PTA taxes) are expected to be staggering:

iPhone 18 Pro Max (256GB, PTA Approved): Depending on global price hikes, expect it to start anywhere between Rs. 665,000 to Rs. 740,000.

iPhone Ultra (Foldable): If launched at the rumored $2,000 price point, it will cost around Rs. 1,000,000 in Pakistan. If it hits the $2,500 mark, expect to pay upwards of Rs. 1,200,000.

Final Verdict:

If you are currently using an iPhone 17 Pro Max, there is no rush to upgrade on day one. Wait for the initial hype to die down and prices to stabilize before making the jump to the 18 Pro Max. As for the foldable iPhone Ultra? Unless you have a million rupees to spend on a first-generation experiment, it is best to skip it entirely.
