Apple’s Record $114.5 Billion Quarter Came Before a Single iPhone Duo Sale

Apple’s September quarter was a record — and the iPhone Duo had nothing to do with it. That is the single most important thing to understand about the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter results, announced on 2 November 2026. The quarter that produced $114.5 billion in revenue closed on 26 September, almost a month before the Duo reached stores on 23 October (CONFIRMED, Apple press release). The record was set by the iPhone 18 Pro line and by Services, not by the foldable. The Duo’s first numbers are still to come, and they will land in the December quarter instead.

The quarter in figures

Total revenue: $114.5 billion, up 12 percent year over year — a September-quarter record (CONFIRMED, Apple)
iPhone revenue: $57.6 billion, up from $49.0 billion — a September-quarter record (CONFIRMED, Apple)
Full-year iPhone revenue: $254.1 billion, up from $209.6 billion (CONFIRMED, Apple)
Services revenue: $31.6 billion, an all-time high, up from $28.8 billion (CONFIRMED, Apple)
Gross margin: 47.9 percent, including about one percentage point from tariff refunds (CONFIRMED, Apple)
Net income / EPS: $30.7 billion; $2.10 per share, up 14 percent (CONFIRMED, Apple)
Full-year revenue: $478.8 billion — Apple’s best fiscal year ever (CONFIRMED, Apple)

Why the iPhone number matters more than the headline

A 17 percent rise in iPhone revenue is striking on its own. It is more striking once the shape of the line-up is taken into account: this refresh had no standard model, with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carrying the quarter (REPORTED, coverage of the results). The quarter captured the opening period of the 18 cycle, and it did so while Apple was still selling through a line-up that had no new entry-level phone and no foldable. That points to buyers moving up the range rather than waiting — the opposite of the usual pre-launch pause that a widely trailed new form factor can cause.

Services did the quieter half of the work. At $31.6 billion, the division covering the App Store, subscriptions, payments and related businesses set an all-time high, growing about 10 percent year over year (CONFIRMED, Apple). Mac revenue also climbed sharply, to $10.8 billion from $8.7 billion (REPORTED, coverage of the results). Together, those two lines explain why the quarter looks broad-based rather than dependent on a single phone.

The Duo question the quarter cannot answer

Apple’s own release names the Duo as part of “our most ambitious line-up yet,” calling it the most transformational iPhone since the original (CONFIRMED, Apple). But nothing in the September figures measures it. The Duo’s pre-orders opened 16 October and retail availability began 23 October, with a second wave on 30 October (CONFIRMED, Apple announcements). Its revenue, its effect on average selling price and any sign of whether foldables expand the iPhone market or cannibalise Pro sales will all show up first in the December quarter.

That makes the December quarter the real Duo test, and Apple has already raised the bar for it: chief financial officer Kevan Parekh said the company expects December-quarter revenue to grow 7 to 10 percent, which would make it the best quarter for revenue in Apple’s history (REPORTED, coverage of the earnings call). The guidance comes with a caveat Apple itself flags — constrained supply (REPORTED). Early anecdotes point the same way, with some online delivery estimates for the Duo reported as slipping into late January (REPORTED, coverage citing CNBC). Those are anecdotes, not Apple guidance, and they cut both ways: strong demand, weak supply, or both.

What else changed at the top

The quarter was also the first earnings report under chief executive John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on 1 September 2026 (CONFIRMED, Apple and coverage). Apple generated $28 billion in operating cash flow in the quarter and returned $28 billion to shareholders, and its installed base of active devices reached a new all-time high across all major product categories (CONFIRMED, Apple). The board declared a cash dividend of $0.27 per share, payable 16 November to shareholders of record on 12 November (CONFIRMED, Apple).

Final Verdict

Read the quarter for what it is: proof that the iPhone business set a record without its most talked-about product. The 18 Pro line and Services carried a $114.5 billion quarter, and the full-year $478.8 billion total caps Apple’s best fiscal year. The Duo’s story starts now, in the December quarter, against guidance that already promises Apple’s biggest quarter ever. If the foldable meets that bar, the September record will look like a warm-up. If supply constraints bite, the December print will show it first — and that, not another hardware review, is the number to watch.
