GTA 6 vs GTA 5: Every Confirmed Difference, From Two Leads to Six Wanted Stars

Leads: GTA V had three (Franklin, Michael, Trevor); GTA VI has two (Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos)
Setting: Los Santos and Blaine County (California) → Leonida and Vice City (Florida)
Map: roughly twice GTA V’s, across six named regions instead of three zones
Wanted level: five stars → six stars, with a heat system that tracks what police know about you
Female lead: none in GTA V → Lucia, the first female lead in the mainline series
Interiors: limited in GTA V → an order of magnitude more in GTA VI
Online: GTA Online arrived after GTA V’s launch → no GTA Online details shared for GTA VI yet

Two Leads Instead of Three

GTA V let players switch between three male protagonists, Franklin, Michael and Trevor, each with a home, skills and a largely separate story. GTA VI cuts the cast to two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple who work as partners. Their closeness is measured on a four-point scale that grows with time spent together, and they cannot fully split up. Lucia is the first female lead in the mainline series, and the shift changes the story’s shape. Where GTA V constantly moved between three separate lives, GTA VI follows one partnership, and its new Criminal Profile system ties story consequences to how that pair behaves.

From a City to a State

GTA V covered Los Santos and Blaine County, three zones of downtown, suburbs and wilderness. GTA VI covers the state of Leonida, with six named regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. Rockstar puts Leonida at roughly twice GTA V’s map, with landmass nearly matching GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos, and the towns outside it add up to about eleven times what GTA V had outside its city. Fan mapping projects, working partly from leaked material, estimate Leonida’s land at about 85.6 square kilometres against just under 50 for GTA V on the same measure, around 1.7 times. Treat that as an estimate, not a Rockstar measurement. The clearer difference is variety: Grassrivers swamp, Leonida Keys islands and Mount Kalaga national park are genuinely different environments, with wildlife as a gameplay element, including alligators confirmed in Grassrivers.

Police That Remember

In GTA V, wanted stars cleared when you hid well or outran the search. In GTA VI, police build up what they know about you, shown as icons under the wanted stars: what you look like, what you are wearing, what you are driving, and whether you are together. That knowledge is the heat system, and it means escaping is about changing what witnesses described, not just breaking line of sight. The tools around it are new as well. K-9 units chase and pin suspects, officers use spike strips, and expensive cars can carry GPS trackers. The wanted level runs to six stars instead of five. And where GTA V had no equivalent of the Criminal Profile, GTA VI ranks behaviour from “Professional” to “Irredeemable” and lets it influence the story, though how far that influence reaches is still unconfirmed.

A Living World

GTA V’s pedestrians followed behaviour scripts: walk, react, flee, call the police. GTA VI’s NPCs carry personalities that shape aggression and reactions, backed by around 600,000 animations, with bystanders filming incidents and reacting to what they witness. Interiors jump by an order of magnitude over past games, and Leonida’s buses and trains run on real schedules. Weather is driven by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season, days and nights last longer, and storms can lightly damage aircraft.

What Has Not Changed, and What Is Still Unknown

Some things carry over: a single-player crime story at the centre, a satirical American setting, and a studio that has spent over a decade building on GTA V’s success. GTA V launched in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before reaching newer hardware; GTA VI is built for current hardware only, launching November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC date confirmed and no mobile version announced. US listings put the standard edition at a reported $79.99, and pre-load is reported for November 12, but neither is a confirmed Rockstar announcement in the same way as the date and platforms. One comparison cannot be settled yet. GTA V’s story remains one of the best-regarded in the open-world genre, and GTA VI will need to earn that comparison through its actual narrative rather than its setting and systems. Nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game.

What to Watch Next

The differences above come from Rockstar’s trailers and the Edge preview, not from players’ hands. November 19 is when they stop being claims and start being experience: which systems matter in daily play, whether the Criminal Profile genuinely changes the story, and whether Leonida’s size feels like freedom or empty space. That verdict belongs to launch week.
