The 2004 Adventure, Rebuilt
DreamWorks Shrek 2 Remastered arrives November 10, 2026, from Aspyr, the studio behind a string of rebuilt classics, working with Universal. It revives the 2004 console action-adventure, the team-based game from Luxoflux and Activision, rather than the separate single-player platformer that PC players got in 2004. That distinction matters for anyone returning: this is the four-character group adventure, rebuilt for modern hardware. Everything has been rebuilt with better textures, an enhanced user interface, reworked cutscenes and 4K resolution on supporting platforms. The journey runs from Shrek’s swamp to Fiona’s castle in Far Far Away, through familiar places and faces, with bosses to beat and environmental puzzles to solve. Players control Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and others, swapping between characters at any point to use each one’s different abilities in fights and puzzles.
Co-op Is the Big Addition
The original console game supported local co-op. The remaster keeps that and adds online play, for groups of up to four across local, online or mixed sessions — two people on a sofa can bring distant friends along, or a whole group can meet online. That mixed option is the most useful addition for a scattered group of friends. One limit needs stating before anyone buys copies for a remote group: cross-platform play has not been confirmed, so agree on a version first. On PlayStation 5, the store lists PlayStation Plus as a requirement for online play, and Nintendo likewise lists Nintendo Switch Online for its online features.
Photo Mode, Cheats and the GTA-Style Trailer
Two smaller additions round out the package. A Photo Mode lets players pose the whole gang, adjusting character visibility, poses and expressions for the shot. A Cheats Menu opens additional gameplay options, though Aspyr has not revealed exactly which cheats are included or how they work. The announcement itself became a talking point. Aspyr revealed the game with a trailer that parodies Grand Theft Auto VI’s style, from the glowing outline title reveal to the cinematic framing, nine days before Rockstar’s game launches. It is a joke at GTA’s expense from a game that knows exactly what week it chose.
Price and What to Check Before Buying
The US standard price is $29.99, with pre-orders carrying a 10% discount to $26.99. Reports differ on when that discount ends, with some store listings showing November 17 and early reports pointing to November 9, so check the end date on your platform’s store page before committing, along with local pricing outside the US. Aspyr has said nothing about downloadable content or post-launch updates, so treat the launch package as the whole offer for now.
What to Watch Next
November 10 is the test for the co-op: whether four-player sessions hold up online, and whether the rebuilt visuals satisfy players who remember the original. After that, the open questions are cross-platform play, which Aspyr has not confirmed, and whether the Cheats Menu hides anything worth finding. For a game launching nine days before GTA VI, simply being noticed is already half the battle.
